Kicking wing mirrors…

Posted by Fyse on Friday, 29 October 2004

It’s 1 o’clock in the morning, and I have an important project due in tomorrow, so obviously I chose to trawl through all the ultra-detailed stats about my website. I find that I had nine visitors yesterday, that 10% of my recent visitors were from France (eh?!), and that one poor sod tried to view my site at a resolution of 800×600. Someone with a computer that outdated was a worth a closer look, and it turns out they’re from the Indiana University in Bloomington. How did they find my page? With a Google search for ‘caffeine stats’. Try it, without quotes or anything. I’m the top hit! Hooray! How crazy is that?

That made me look a bit closer at the other hits from search engines. There were a few from searches for my name (no suprises there), and also another person from the states looking for stats about caffeine. The only other referral from a search engine was when someone had searched for “kicking wing mirrors”, and been directed to the list of people banned from my site. Why on earth is someone from the University of East Anglia searching for that? One of life’s great mysteries…

I don’t have a way of checking my stats anymore. Used to use this blogger tool, but now it’s gone. Anyway, someone got to my blog via a hit for “sister joist.” I feel bad for those people. You know, they’re looking for some real information about something, and then they end up on my blog where all it says is something like, “I installed a sister joist.” Very helpful indeed.

People have found my blog for all sorts of reasons. I found your blog, ironically because of a post on Bean’s blog that inspired a debate about what draws us to (and from) blogs we read. As you waited ever so patiently, here’s the semi-ironic part I was talking about. I clicked on your comment and read your “banned list” and noticed you list anyone who doesn’t agree, in a broad sense, with your opinions as banned from your blog. If you read the comments on Bean’s most recent post, however, I find it funny I was brought here at this particular time…and entry.

If you don’t read those comments well then, disregard the message from the random, foolish stranger known as Janet.

Oz - Try www.statcounter.com for all you statistical needs. It’s great, and it’s free! All you’ll have to do is add a bit of code to your Blogger template.

Janet - I hope you realise that ‘The List’ was a joke. Not all of it, but most. And I did read those comments.
