Phew, switching hosts just as your domain is expiring is not easy. Almost everything is sorted now however, and despite my gross incompetence the domain name did not disappear into the ether. My old providers were going to charge me an absurd amount to renew the domain, and my new providers so far seem excellent, with very prompt technical support (even if it was their fault in the first place). So it looks like it should all be worth it.
